Art of Choosing the Right Lingerie

How to choose your bridal lingerie

Top tips for picking the perfect pieces

We asked the expert team to share their top tips for picking your bridal lingerie. Read on to discover the basic mistake we all make, how you can match your underwear to your wedding dress and the one piece every bride should pack in her honeymoon suitcase.

First things first

As soon as you have bought your dress you should bring it to a fitting so that your fitter can take into account any delicate materials, low backs and differing necklines and advise on the perfect solution for you. Brides often lose weight in the run-up to a wedding, so we would definitely advise an initial fitting, usually followed with a second just before your final wedding dress fitting. We have an alterations department on-hand for any last minute tweaks - alternatively, look out for local lingerie seamstresses that come with a recommendation if you need adjustments made before the big day.

What lingerie should brides choose to stay comfortable during their big day?

Bridal underwear is as important as the gown itself, ensuring you feel exquisite yet sexy and, most importantly, comfortable and well-supported. A lot of brides come for fittings at Rigby & Peller so that our lingerie stylists can fit them in the correct size to make sure they are looking their best on the big day. We normally recommend seam-free underwear to give a smooth silhouette. You need to be careful if you choose a lacy set or an embroidered set as they may show through. Many brides like to choose a second set of underwear for their wedding night, so they can opt for controlwear for the day and something sexier for the night!

The basic lingerie mistakes we all make...

The most common error women make is wearing a bra too small in the cup and too big in the back. You should feel comfortable in your bra all day, every day. This will increase your confidence because you know that you are wearing a bra which not only fits perfectly, but also beautifully enhances your shape and figure.

Different styles
Depending on the style of your dress we would recommend...
- A basque is very flattering because they uplift and hold in at the same time. However, this solution won’t work under a corseted dress.
- If your dress has straps we would always recommend going for a bra with straps as this will give you the most support and flattering silhouette.
- For strapless dresses, we offer multi-way bras - they're a wardrobe essential as you can wear them as a regular strapless bra, with one strap or as a halterneck. These are great for your honeymoon, too!

we have styles to suit every neckline, as well as the shape and construction of your wedding dress.

It doesn't have to be white

The colour of your lingerie depends on your dress. Cream or ivory lingerie is really special; nude lingerie is also really popular with brides-to-be as white usually shows through most fabrics.

The perfect honeymoon lingerie...

For your honeymoon, we would definitely recommend being a little more adventurous with your lingerie sets -  matching underwear always makes you feel a million dollars! Silky nightwear is luxurious and sexy, and is also practical for packing as it's so compact.

Most importantly, make time to have a swimwear fitting. We know swimwear shopping can be a daunting task but well chosen pieces will make you look and feel great. Ensuring you have the right style, size, colour and selecting a well-placed print or decoration will flatter and slim your figure by enhancing your best features. Pick underwiring or ruffles to enhance your bust, control panels to cinch in your waist and high-legs or tie-sides to lengthen your legs

Don’t despair when you shop for lingerie. Every body type can be flattered by the right cut. Try these tips for finding lingerie you feel confident and sexy in.

Step 1: Identify your body type

Body types aren’t the final word in selecting lingerie. When you evaluate your own body, try not to shove yourself completely into a specific type. You may be a little bit pear-shaped and a little bit lean. You may be petite and busty. You may be plus-sized and muscular. Ultimately, when identifying your body type, consider what you look good in when you’re wearing regular clothes. Do you like a cinched waist? A low-cut top? Tight jeans? Lingerie comes in many styles, and it’s easy to find sexy bedroom outfits that mimic the everyday clothes you wear. It's all about hugging your body in the right places and letting fabric drape in all the other places.

Step 2: Focus on what you want to show off

When you want to feel confident and sexy, focus on the parts of your body you love. Every woman has insecurities, so don’t beat yourself up over negative feelings about aspects of your physique. Just look for lingerie that accents what you love, and what your partner loves. If he says he loves your butt, don’t second-guess him. Guys don’t see the cellulite and other details that women obsess over. Lingerie also doesn’t have to be ultra-skimpy. Even a long nightgown can be super-sexy if it’s sheer and clingy in the right places. Wear what you feel good in.

Step 3: Try on lots of options

Wear a G-string when you go shopping for lingerie so that you can leave it on while you try on various options. Try not to shop online if you can help it. At the same time, remember that dressing room lighting is borderline evil and definitely not universally flattering. When you’re getting use out of the lingerie, you’ll probably be in a more forgiving atmosphere and a more excited mood. If you have a really close friend who doesn’t mind seeing you in frilly undergarments, bring her along for a second opinion.

Step 4: Choose two ensembles

When you try on lingerie, pay attention to how it feels against your skin and how it makes you feel. Lace and sequins might look good, but if they make you itchy and uncomfortable, what’s the point? You want to feel like a sex goddess, not a dress-up doll. As you narrow down your choices, buy two different lingerie ensembles. Try something fussy and super-sexy, and something a little more casual that you can lounge and sleep in. You never know which will come in handy when you’re ready to show off your sexy lingerie to your partner.

FIND LINGERIE FOR YOUR SHAPE

Buying lingerie can be a scary prospect for some women. Skimpy may often equal sexy, and this can lead to thoughts of body issues. That's certainly not sexy! With Relax: Choose the right lingerie look for your body can be simple with our guide below!

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LINGERIE

The first thing to remember is that no matter your body type, never buy anything that accentuates your problem areas. If you have issues with your stomach, try to find a piece of lingerie that is less tight and more flowing in this area. If you like your chest, choose something that is tighter and offers more cleavage, making that the focus of the outfit.

If you are worried about your weight, choose darker colors because they have a more slimming effect. (They also can be used to promote that "bad girl" image that many men find sexy, so choosing black or a dark color could have a twofold benefit for you!)

The goal: You want your lover's eyes to drift to your sexiest areas...
not the ones you are uncomfortable with.

Not all lingerie in every fabric is going to look good on every woman. (If that were the case, there would not be so many types on the market!) So here's a guide to choosing the most flattering lingerie for you:

TALL WOMEN

If you are tall, you are going to look best in the traditional bra, panties, and garter belt look (shown above). This will show off your long legs, and offer a classic beauty that most men find incredibly sexy. If you are going shopping, look for sets that contain all of the items mentioned above to save some money and forgo the hassle of trying to put a new outfit together by matching separate pieces.

ATHLETIC WOMEN

Boy shorts are made for you! This is actually the case for most women who have a nice butt -- regardless of their athletic prowess. These are hot because you can go topless and have your man begging for your attention, or you can opt for more of a tease and add anything from a bra to a slinky robe that only shows off your shorts when you are ready.
Check out this great ruffled mesh boyshort from Fredericks of Hollywood -- they may call it a boyshort, but it's as girlie as girlie can be!

PETITE WOMEN

Go with something that has a long slit along the leg. This slit, whether it is on a long, silky gown or some other form of lingerie, will cause your lover's eyes to roam up the slit and will make you seem much taller than you are.

Plus-size lingerie

PLUS-SIZE WOMEN

If you are full-figured or overweight, you have many of the same options as women who wear smaller sizes. Many women, especially those with a bigger chest, prefer corsets because this gives them a chance to show off their chest and to make some curves when the corset sucks in the waist, giving you that voluptuous look.
Teddys and one piece negligee sets also work well. Go with dark, rich colors that work well with your skin tone for an added effect. This curve-enhancing corset is soft-boned and adjustable, making it a great option for lots of us -- petite or fuller figured!
If you're a bigger woman, there are many shops that deal with just the type of things you will be looking to purchase. One of the best I have found is called Hips and Curves. They offer a selection of lingerie for all different types of women.
